The best way to get rid of nitrate is through frequent water changes (easily done with a gravel vac). In freshwater aquariums live plants will help. In saltwater aquariums protein skimmers and refugiums will help. However, nitrate often persists and nitrate levels as low as 5 ppm can cause algae blooms. Nitrate can also cause stress to fish and invertebrates, and lead to diseases and reproductive failures.

If nitrate persists, the aquarium nitrate removers on this page will help to keep your nitrate levels manageable.

Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge, 3.3 lbs

Kent Marine Nitrate Sponge, 3.3 lbs, is a granular zeolitic medium that directly adsorbs ammonia in freshwater and fosters anaerobic bacteria growth to reduce nitrate levels in both marine and freshwater aquariums.

Use 1 cup for each 20 gallons of aquarium water. More can be used for greater effectiveness. Rinse with fresh water before use (preferably reverse osmosis or de-ionized water). Place in a large mesh bag (800 micron) or a canister filter, directly in water flow. Make sure water flows through the material and not just around it. To control ammonia in freshwater systems, granules can be replaced weekly. When used for controlling nitrates, replace only half of the granules every 3 to 6 months. 1.15 lbs (1 qt) treats 50 gallons (half of this container) and will reduce nitrates by about 20 ppm. Several weeks will be required to see an appreciable drop in nitrates. Test nitrates and ammonia regularly.

Reef Octopus BioSpheres 1000 ml Bag Reef Octopus BioSpheres, 1000 ml Bag

Reef Octopus BioSpheres naturally reduce nitrates and phosphates in an aquarium. Bio-Spheres biopellet media is a 100% pure biologically degradable polymer solid carbon source that helps reduce nitrates and phosphates within a marine environment by encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria and enzymes on the media’s surface. Bio-Spheres provides a food source required for beneficial bacteria to reproduce and metabolize nitrates and phosphates.

It's recommended to use this media in a Bio Pellets Reactor that is designed for Bio Pellet media, such as the Reef Octopus Bio-Pellets Reactors. Use approximately 100 – 150 ml of Bio-Spheres per 25 gallons of system volume or what is suggested for your reactor of choice.

  • 1000 ml Bag
  • 100% natural polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)
  • Round shape
  • Reduces nitrates & phosphates
  • No harmful chemical additives or binders
  • Self regulating media
  • Helps establish low nutrient systems
  • Increases protein skimmer efficiency

Seachem de-nitrate 100 ml Bagged Seachem de-nitrate 100 ml Bagged

Seachem de-nitrate is an economical, natural, porous material with a pore distribution and geometry that promotes both aerobic nitrification within the first few millimeters of depth and anaerobic denitrification at the core. The material has a high surface area and supports a high density of bacteria. Although de-nitrate has capacity to trap nitrate, this, as with other nitrate retaining materials, such as certain zeolites and synthetic resins, is quite limited and the primary mechanism of nitrate removal is anaerobic.

  • de-nitrate (Seachem Web Site)
  • Nitrate control
  • 100 mL of de-nitrate treats about 5–10 gallons, depending on initial nitrate concentration and the current biological load. The de-nitrate is bagged and should be placed in a canister filter, chemical filtration module, or box filter with less than a 50 gph pump flow.

Seachem De-nitrate 1 liter Seachem De-nitrate, 1 liter

Seachem De-nitrate removes nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, and organics from both fresh and marine water. The high porosity of De-nitrate supports the proliferation of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria that further remove these toxic aquarium byproducts. Even when exhausted as an organic adsorbent, de-nitrate continues to be an excellent support for the biological filter and does not have to be removed.

  • For nitrate removal in freshwater & saltwater aquariums
  • This De-nitrate 1 liter container treats 100 gallons. As long as nitrate concentrations remain under control, the product is not exhausted.
  • De-nitrate should be placed in a place with a flow of water, such as in a canister filter, chemical filtration module or box filter
