Description

Freshwater Aquarium Starter Kit: A Combination of Seachem Head Start, API Master Test Kit, Seachem One Year Combo Alert, a JBJ 4" Net and Thermometer
You've just gotten a decent sized aquarium ( 20 to 50 gallons), and you're ready to fill it with tap water and freshwater fish. What do you need to do before adding the water? First all, you need to prepare your water for the fish. We recommend using Seachem Prime to remove chlorine and detoxify the water, Seachem Stability for establishing the biofilter by adding bacteria, and Seachem Clarity to help keep the water clear. These three products are packaged together as the Seachem Head Start Aquarium Conditioning Pack. We include a 50 ml (2 fl. oz.) measuring cup for accurately measuring your additives.

Once you're prepared the water you will want to test the water. For this we have the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Freshwater Master Test Kit. With this test kit you can test for pH, ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. Testing should be done periodically and is especially important when establishing a new tank and adding fish.

As water quality can at times deteriorate rapidly, creating a toxic environment for you fish, we've added the Seachem One Year Combo Alert to constantly monitor your two most critical parameters, pH and ammonia.

We've included a More Aquarium Thermometer so you can be sure that the water temperature is appropriate for the particular fish you have chose. You may or may not need a heater, and the heater you require will depend on many different factors. See the Aquarium Heater General Info article for help choosing a heater.

Finally, there is the JBJ 4" Fine Fish Net w/ Plastic Handle. This net can be used for removing many things from you tank without getting your hands wet. But most importantly you'll want to use the net to put your new fish into the tank. Fish you purchase will typically be in a baggy with water from the tank or origin. You do not want this water in your tank. Pour the contents of the fish baggy with the fish into your net over a bucket and just put the fish into your tank using the net.

These five products are certainly not the only products you will need for a new tank. Along with the tank you will need a filter and a light (which may or may not come with the tank). You will need other cleaning products, such as a Gravel Vac and Magnet Cleaner. You probably will also need a heater and a half dozen items for a fish only tank. For a planted tank the list goes on. However, these are some key products for making sure you have quality water and for getting your new tank established.
