For those of us who have been in the hobby for a while, it seems like each additive manufacturer has their own take on the same basic additives. Picking a brand is just based on personal preference and what you like. Dino XWhen I started in the hobby over 15 years ago, nobody was having dinoflagellate issues, but with fewer people using live rock and more nutrient-poor systems, we are seeing more and more people struggle with dinoflagellate outbreaks. Sometimes feeding the tank more or adding a UV sterilizer will fix the problem, but sometimes it seems like nothing will work.

Bacto Reef BallsThere are many different bacterial supplements for your aquarium. Bacterial supplements can help enhance the biological filtration in your aquarium, and prevent unwanted bacteria like Cyano Bacteria, and Coral diseases. Bacto Reef Balls is a unique way of dosing beneficial bacteria. The bacteria are placed inside dissolving gel balls. These balls can be placed in a sump or filter and then they slowly release beneficial bacteria over time as they dissolve. This is an excellent low maintenance way to automate the addition of live bacteria.
Multi ReferenceI have gotten plenty of test results that I don’t believe. Sometimes I get two test kits with wildly different results, and I am left wondering which one is correct. Fauna Marin
Multi Reference is a multiple-parameter calibration solution. It has fixed values for salinity, calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, nitrate, phosphate, strontium, and potassium. You simply take some of the solution, run it through your test kit, and then see if the value the test kit reads matches the verified value printed on the bottle. It is great to keep a bottle on hand to periodically check your test kits to ensure they are accurate.
Ready2ReefThere has recently been a lot of hype around one-part supplements that include calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity in one bottle.
Ready2Reef is Fauna Marin’s take on this type of product. It does what it says and adds all three major elements at once while being super concentrated. This is a great supplement for small reef aquariums and aquarists who appreciate simplicity and want to avoid dosing a dozen different additives in the tank.
Total ICPThere are many different ICP tests on the market now. Fauna Marin offers two different ICP tests,
Reef ICP and
Total ICP. The
Reef ICP is more affordable and is a basic ICP test. The standout is the
Total ICP. The Fauna Marin
Total ICP includes ICP testing of both your aquarium water and RO/DI water, as well as lab tests for common molecules that are not included in ICP testing because they are atomized during the process. These molecules include dissolved CO2, alkalinity, nitrate, and phosphate. In addition to being one of the most complete water tests, the report is also the easiest we have found to understand and interpret. Many people get ICP test results and then have no idea what to do with them. The Fauna Marin results are very detailed and provide specific recommended actions to address issues, making them easy to interpret.
