Which API Medication Do You Need? Melafix or Pimafix?

API makes two popular aquarium medications with very similar sounding names, Melafix and Pimafix. Melafix and Pimafix are both herbal medications for aquarium fish. What’s the difference? Essentially Melafix is an antibacterial medication while Pimafix is an antifungal medication. Here is a short guide to help you figure out if your fish needs an antifungal or antibacterial medication.

For Fungal Infections Use Pimafix
Fungal infections typically appear as a white cotton like growth on a fish’s mouth, body or fins. Fungal infections are common in freshwater fish, but are almost never seen in saltwater fish. Fungal infections go by the common names mouth rot, fin rot, or gill rot. Egg fungus is also a common pestilence on fish eggs looking like a white cotton growth. Pimafix is effective at treating fungal infections. To treat fungal infections with Pimafix first Remove any activated carbon or chemical filtration media and add the manufacturer recommended dose daily. The medication will help to kill any fungus present on the fish. Please note that fungal infections often occur in dirty or poorly kept aquariums. If you have a fungus outbreak, it is likely a sign that your tank water quality is declining and your tank will likely benefit from some extra cleaning.

For Bacterial Infections Use Melafix
Bacterial infections are common in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. There are many different types of bacterial infections that go by a wide variety of names. Popeye is a bacterial infection of a fish’s eye where the fish’s eye swells into a balloon looking bubble. Fin, mouth, and gill rot can also be bacterial and not just fungal. When bacterial, the lesions tend to look more red and flat rather than the raised white cotton-like growth that appears with fungal infections. Fish can also get bacterial infections if they have an open wound. Swelling and red discoloration are signs that a wound is getting infected. Skin Ulcers are a bacterial infection of the fish’s body where the scales turn red and slough off.

Melafix is effective against bacterial infections. To treat with Melafix, remove carbon and turn off the protein skimmer if you have one. Add the recommended dose daily for at least 1 week or until symptoms subside. If you have a saltwater aquarium, you will want to use Melafix Marine specifically designed for use in seawater.

Melafix can also be used as an antibacterial dip for corals. Make the dip by adding 30ml of Melafix to 1 gallon of tank water and then immersing the affected coral in the solution for 10-15 minutes. After the dip is complete, dump out the leftover solution and return the coral to the aquarium.
